CATEGORY at The Belasco
A 1926 theater in DTLA’s South Park, now a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument — and where CATEGORY throws its biggest nights.
A theater with a queer history
The Belasco opened in 1926, commissioned by oil tycoon Edward L. Doheny, and spent nearly three decades as a working playhouse before closing as a theater in 1950.
In the 1970s and ’80s the building housed two churches, including an early LGBTQ-affirming congregation, Metropolitan Community Church. It sat vacant from 1988 until reopening as an event venue on March 19, 2011, and is now a designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument.
Getting there
The Belasco sits on Hill St in Downtown LA’s South Park neighborhood, a walkable distance north of LA Metro’s B/D Line (Pershing Square and 7th St/Metro Center stations).
Downtown LA has metered street parking and paid lots and garages near Hill St; rates and availability vary by night, so check posted signage when you arrive. Rideshare is common for nightlife downtown.
